creating COmmunity
By humanizing the needs of residents, we recognize that it is necessary to connect with nature and interact with others, while also being protected and private. Meeting these individual needs provides a solid foundation for building a larger, interpersonal community. We empower residents by giving them the freedom of choice, through increasing grades of privacy and shelter. Our mindful approach to blending outdoor, indoor, public, and private spaces eliminates the barriers to creating community.
Humanizing the Needs of Affordable Housing
Degrees of Privacy
We keep in mind the varying levels of privacy that are often lacking in affordable housing. As each resident moves from outdoors into their homes, there is a seamless transition from public to semi-private shared spaces. Paved walkways, conscientious landscaping, and a beautiful shared entryway supplement this sequence.
Each resident has access to both private outdoor space and a communal rooftop, allowing them to interact with their neighbors or take moments to be alone.

SHARED ENTRYWAY
Both the condominium and fourplex design implement a shared foyer/lobby area. These semi-private spaces support the possibility of chance encounters and community building among residents. Taking notes from the Bullitt Center, we feature well designed staircases that promote physical activity and social interaction.

SHARED MAILROOM
Opportunities to create community are essential to the social goals of our design. By taking rooms that are often overlooked, such as a mailroom, and making them both accessible and beautiful, we elevate these spaces beyond utility alone.

COMMUNITY ROOFTOP
With our promotion of community, we intend to use the rooftop space as an area where the residents may not only gather for meals and events, but also work towards growing their own food together. In doing so, we create a space that is multi-functional while giving a greater sense of permanence sustainability to our communal space.
